Melissa Levin Emerging Artist price 2019

Le Musée Textile Museum du Canada de Toronto annonce les gagnants du troisième prix, 2019 : Carrie Allison, Jagdeep Raina, and Audie Murray.

The Melissa Levin Emerging Artist Award helps emerging artists conduct self-directed activities such as art production, apprenticeships, residencies, and research.

The Textile Museum of Canada supports the applicant’s customized program of research and access to the Museum’s library, exhibitions, and permanent collection.

About the 2019 Award Winners:

Carrie Allison (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) is an Indigenous, mixed-ancestry artist born and raisedon unceded and unsurrendered Coast Salish Territory with roots in High Prairie, Alberta. With this award, Carrie will purchase computer equipment to explore animation as an extension of her textile-based practice. Her work can be seen in the Textile Museum ofCanada’s current exhibition, Wild, until March 15, 2020.

Jagdeep Raina (Guelph, Ontario) shares stories of Southern Ontario’s Sikh diaspora through his works on paper and embroideries. With this award, Jagdeep will study weaving techniques that will further connect him to family textile traditions in Kashmir, India. His solo exhibition, Chase, will open at the Textile Museum of Canada in the fall of 2020.

Audie Murray (Victoria, British Columbia) is a multi-disciplinary Métis artist from Regina, Saskatchewan, treaty 4 territory. She is currently learning and creating on the unceded territories of the WSÁNEĆ and Lekwungen peoples. Audie received an Honourable Mention Award, and plans to deepen herresearch into rug hooking, beadwork, and quillwork.

About Melissa LevinMelissa Levin (1958-2015) : she was an artist, mentor and teacher whose career asa textile and costume designer was synonymous with her exuberant love of colour and pattern. This award was established in honour of Melissa’s passion for mentoring emerging artists, with generous donations made by family, friends,and communities.
