Achaintre’s sculptures often resemble masks. Masks appear in different cultures throughout the world. They stimulate our imagination and have the potential to take on a life of their own in the mind of the viewer. The title of the exhibition refers to the fictional character Fantômas, who is the star of the series of crime fiction by the French authors Marcel Allain and Pierre Souvestre. For Achaintre, the mask is a place where fantasy and reality can exist at the same time.
