Cut Piece est une performance participative réalisée par Yoko Ono le 20 juillet 1964 au Yamaichi Concert Hall de Kyoto au Japon. Le public était invité à venir couper aux ciseaux un morceau de la tenue vestimentaire de l’artiste à l’endroit qu’il souhaitait. Cette action vue comme féministe, montre une forme de violence et de perversion dans la transformation du spectateur en acteur allant jusqu’ à dénuder la performeuse aux yeux de tous et toutes alors que l’artiste ne semble montrer aucun geste contestataire, restant à genoux et les yeux baissés. Cette proposition arrive dans le contexte des années 60, après une série d’Instructions Pieces comme la Kitchen Piece ou la Pea Piece montrant dès lors des choix d’avant-garde artistique que Yoko Ono développe notamment entre poésie, performance, cinéma et musique expérimentale sur la scène new-yorkaise. La même année, l’artiste développera également lors du Perpetual Fluxfest (du mouvement Fluxus), d’autres créations comme Bag Piece, Beat Piece ou encore Sky Piece for Jesus Christ qui, comme toutes les autres Instructions Pieces (dont Cut Piece), se retrouveront dans un recueil publié sous le nom de Grapefruit: A Book of Instructions and Drawings.

Cut Piece is a participatory performance performed by Yoko Ono on July 20, 1964 at the Yamaichi Concert Hall in Kyoto, Japan. The public was invited to come and cut with scissors a piece of the artist's clothing at the place they wanted. This action, seen as feminist, shows a form of violence and perversion in the transformation of the spectator into an actor, going so far as to strip Yoko Ono in the eyes of everyone, while the artist does not seem to show any protest gesture, remaining on his knees and eyes down. This performance comes in the context of the 60s, after a series of Instructions Pieces such as the Kitchen Piece or the Pea Piece showing from then on artistic avant-garde proposals that Yoko Ono develops in particular between poetry, performance, cinema and experimental music on the New York scene. The same year, the artist will also develop during the Perpetual Fluxfest (of the Fluxus movement), other creations such as Bag Piece, Beat Piece or Sky Piece for Jesus Christ which, like all the other Instructions Pieces (including Cut Piece), will be found in a collection published under the name of Grapefruit: A Book of Instructions and Drawings.
